Bond of Brothers
Honoring the lives of brothers John and Matthew Gaudreau
The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation was created to honor the lives of brothers John and Matty Gaudreau, whose passion for hockey and love for others touched countless lives. Founded by their families after their tragic passing in 2024, the Foundation exists to carry forward their legacy.
We support youth hockey programs, assist families in the hockey community facing hardship, and raise awareness around the dangers of drunk driving. Through these efforts, we aim to reflect the kindness, heart, and spirit that defined John and Matty—on and off the ice.

John (born August 13, 1993) and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau (born December  5, 1994) were New Jersey–born hockey players who tragically died together on August 29, 2024, in a bicycle accident caused by a suspected drunk driver in Oldmans Township, NJ.
John—nicknamed “Johnny Hockey”—was a dynamic left winger who starred at Boston College, holds records for Team USA in international competitions, won the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, and played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets, earning seven All-Star nods and the Lady Byng Trophy. A super star hockey player and an even more remarkable father.
Matty, also a dynamic forward, skated at Boston College for four years- his freshman year was alongside his brother. Senior year, Matty led his team in points. Following Boston College, Matty played professional in the AHL, ECHL, and one season overseas. After he hung up the skates, Matty went back to the rink where it all started to coach youth hockey.
Matty simultaneously coached high school hockey at his alma mater for a few years until he made the decision to step away to focus solely on coaching junior hockey full time. Beyond his accomplishments as a player and a coach, Matty was a devoted husband and father who always placed his family at the center of his life.
Your support can help honor the legacy of John and Matty by funding projects that provide ice hockey opportunities for youth in low-income areas, support hockey families facing tragedies, and help families that are impacted by drunk driving.
